Nath Iley

Nathan Iley goes though to the Midland Counties Semi Final after beating tough opponent Nicky Black of KK’s School of Boxing in Nottingham. The bout was the last on a cracking bill held by Retford ABC in Worksop. The show hosted England Reps and five title bouts including Iley’s ABA National Novice Championship campaign at 75kg Middleweight. Black stopped his last opponent, Boston’s Turgous in dramatic fashion which set up the clash with Iley as a tasty bout. This one certainly lived up to the hype as both men wanted to go to war although Iley took on the role as more the boxer and Black the aggressor.  Round one was very eve , Iley looked the tidier and sharper and took the opening round. Round two saw Black edge his way back into the contest, his strength was always going to be a key factor in the contest  which would decide the Notts & Lincs Championship. The last round was decided by heart, both men worked hard as the last few seconds looked like a scene from a Rocky movie. Maybe not one of Iley’s best performances but certainly a great entertaining bout. Iley will now face the winner of Jake Meadon and Earl Gordon who box in Birmingham on Sunday.

Grimsby Boxing Academy’s Nathan Iley starting his ABA Novice National Championship campaign with a good victory in the Notts & Lincs Semi Finals. Opposing him was Bilborough ABC boxer Aaron Gardner from Nottingham. Dubbed the Fighting Fireman Iley has been back by many as one of the favourites of the tournament for boxers who have 10-20 contests to their name. Iley boxed well throughout his first contest in over 10 months, he was always in control as Gardner couldn’t build enough momentum to put Iley under any pressure. The Grimsby Middleweight ran out a unanimous winner and will now box in the Notss & Lincs ABA Final in Worksop on Friday. Opposing him will be the dangerous Nicky Black of KK’s ABC, Nottingham. Black stopped his polish opponent Rimas Turguass in the 2nd round of their contest on the same bill at the Lincoln Hospital Social Club. The pair will meet on Friday in what will be a fascinating contest to decide who will go through to the Midland rounds in a fortnight’s time.

LINCS PVC SUPPORT GBA

// September 26th, 2011 // No Comments » // News

Local Business LINCS PVC have stepped forward and generously donated £100 towards the cost of this season’s registrations for the club. With the cost of registrations going up every year it would be very difficult to keep the voluntary organisation afloat without the help of sponsorship. GBA are a very busy club with coaches, boxers and volunteers travelling to courses, squads, competitions and seminars to give our club every chance of success. To help with expenses towards fuel etc the Academy are still in need of further assistance, any local businesses interested in helping the Academy however big or small should contact a member of the GBA team.

Lincs PVC is an established FENSA registered local family owned business, employing only local tradesmen to supply and install high quality windows, doors and conservatories. We also replace fascia, barge boards and rain water goods. With guarantees of up to 10 years, we offer a replacement glass and window and door repair services, whilst at all times keeping the costs as low as possible.

Grimsby Boxing Academy took four boxers to the La Santa Sports facility in Lanzarote in preparation for the new Boxing season. Nathan Iley, Ben Shaw, Daniel Machin and Darren Farrar all took part in a camp which included a gruelling 20 sessions in 7 days. The boxing camp was originally set up by Frank Bruno who used the facilities at La Santa to prepare for his up coming fights. It was Bruno that set the boxing ring up which then attracted other boxing names like Ole Klemetsen, Stevie Smith and Audley Harrison. Head Coach Andy Cox organised the trip to prepare his athletes for a big season ahead. With Iley competing in the ABA Novice Championships and both Machin and Shaw competing in Cyprus in October, the hot weather and high altitude will stand them in good stead for these competitions. Cox went on to say, “This camp has been ideal preparation for our boxers. Being with them 24/7 I have been able to monitor everything from nutrition to recovery which is something I maybe wouldn’t have the luxury of doing at home. I am very pleased with how they all dealt with it and I am very excited for the new season ahead.” Machin has a warm up contest on 30th September to prepare for Cyprus whilst Iley is waiting for confirmation of his first round bout in the ABA Championships.

The Grimsby Institute Group (GIG) & Grimsby Boxing Academy (GBA) are working together to help develop Grimsby’s top Boxing talent.

GIG already have several sports academies including football, golf and tennis and are proud to announce that GBA Head Coach, Andy Cox, will front the programme which will be running from September.

Any learner from Grimsby Institute that enrols on a full-time course can access up to 10 hours per week of free boxing tuition and along with learning the techniques and getting fit, participants can learn about nutrition and gain access to sports therapy from some of the best sporting professionals in the country.

The programme is designed to help develop aspiring boxers whilst studying at one of the region’s most well-known education providers. Andy said:

“This is a massive opportunity for young boxers in the area to move to the next level whilst receiving an education. In other countries like the US similar programmes have been set up as scholarships for elite sports people and have been very successful.  We believe by mixing both education with sport we can provide a winning formula.”

If you are interested in joining any of the Sports Academies or enrolling on any of the courses at the Grimsby Institute please contact Matt Bloomer on (01472) 311222 ext: 639 or for interest in the Boxing Academy please contact GBA’s Head Coach, Andy Cox, on 07515 544 441.

Grimsby Boxing Academy are almost there on raising funds which will help a small team of boxers travel to a multi nations tournament in Cyprus in October. The board at GBA are calling on local businesses for interest in helping these boxers realise this dream chance. GBA Chairman Carl Chambers today gave us this message, “I would like to personally ask for any local businesses or individuals who can offer any assistance in sending our young amateur boxers on a once in a lifetime trip to Cyprus to contact Andy or any of the GBA staff at the Church Street Gym. GBA are keen to keep promoting Grimsby amateur boxing locally and internationally and our representation at this tournament will enhance the already good reputation of Grimsby amateur boxing even further.” The tournament will run from 20th-24th October in Lemesia, Cyprus and is open for all nations and ages. GBA have been very successful in this sort of tournament before as seven competitors have represented the Academy fetching home impressive two silver and five gold medals between them. £300 is all that is preventing the trip from happening now so bosses are pleading for local companies to help. So far GBA have held several fundraising events which has helped raise enough money to part fund the trip. Such events as a quiz night, a bingo night and bag packing in Tesco has helped raise funds. It is thanks to one of our main sponsors Links Taxis who have kept this dream alive by donating towards the trip. GBA head coach Andy Cox commented, “Josie at Links Taxis has always helped GBA from day one. She helped me so much when I was competing and has continued to support me and the Academy and for that we are very grateful. Not only has she donated money to pay for the trip she has also offered to pay for one of her Taxis to take us to Manchester Airport and back for the Tournament. Everybody involved can’t thank Links Taxis enough.” Anybody who can help in any way should contact Andy on 075155 44441.

BEN MAKES ‘SHAW’ THIS TIME

// May 17th, 2011 // No Comments » // News

Ben Shaw made sure his opponent Kieran Seal wouldn’t want a third contest between the two boxers after beating him by unanimous decision at an open show in Brigg. Shaw of GBA beat Seal earlier this month at Kirton Lindsey Barracks on a majority decision. The contest was very similar to the first encounter only this time Shaw finished the final round stronger and ran out the deserved winner.  Head Coach Andy Cox commented, “Ben is improving all the time and at a fast rate. He has two more bouts before the end of the season but will train hard over the summer to prepare for the ABA Junior Championships next season.” Now Seal of Lincoln’s Terry Allen Unique Club can feel that he has been beaten fair and square and will move on to other possible bouts.
