LANZAROTE TRAINING CAMP A SUCCESS!

Grimsby Boxing Academy head coach Andy Cox travelled with 2 local businessmen Steve Stansfield and Mike Welburn to train at the Club La Santa training camp in Lanzarote. The camp is set up for athletes and sports people of all levels, ages and background. The facilities include an athletics track, Olympic swimming pool, tennis courts, football pitches, basketball courts, a sports hall, a high tech gymnasium and weights room and a health spa. The outdoor boxing ring and punch area is set up next to the athletics track overlooking the sea and mountains of La Santa. Boxers such as Frank Bruno, Audley Harrison, Stevie Smith are to name but a few that have trained in the Club La Santa complex. The aim of the week was to live the life of a full time boxer and to lose as much weight as safely possible. The week consisted of 3 training sessions a day for 6 days. A typical day consisted of:
7 am- 4 mile run or track work, 12pm- 12 rounds of pad work and bag work, 5pm- 12 rounds of sparring or weight training.
Both boxers completed the week course with a total weight loss of 26lb between them. Steve lost a total of 10lb whilst Mike lost 16lb. Academy coach Andy Cox said, ” the lads did fantastic, these lads have no ambition of competing in a boxing ring but have lived the life of a boxer for a week and have seen how much commitment is needed to compete in this sport. The weight loss for both is great and just goes to show what can happen with hard work and discipline. Both men are successful in their own businesses and even when taken out of their comfort zone have shown the same principles needed to make it in Boxing. It was a good eye opener for me too as between sessions i watched other athletes preparing for events. We got some good advice from coaches and athletes but especially from the coaches from Munster Rugby Club who was preparing for their fixture with Edinburgh at the weekend. It was so inspiring to watch all this going on around you.” GBA will use the La Santa facilities again to prepare boxers for big fights and tournaments.
